Hacker Attack on Pentagon E-mail

A hacker has managed to penetrate one of the Pentagon's e-mail systems, leading officials to take up to 1,500 accounts offline.

The e-mail system did not contain classified information relating to military operations, a spokesman said.

The Pentagon says it rebuffs hundreds of attempted attacks on its computer systems each day.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said that a "variety of precautionary measures" were being taken.

"Elements of the... unclassified email system were taken offline yesterday afternoon due to a detected penetration," Mr Gates said.

He said it was expected that the system would be online again very soon.

UK Face 'Cyber Attack'??

Britain's vital infrastructure is at serious and mounting risk of suffering a concerted attack by computer hackers, according to government officials tasked with internet security.

The BBC has learned that Britain, along with other western countries, has been under daily "cyber attack" from foreign intelligence agencies trying to steal secrets through the internet.

But none of these compares with the unprecedented cyber attack launched earlier this summer on Estonia by computers traced to Russia.

Estonia is now calling for an international convention on "cyber crime", while Nato is considering how best to respond to this 21st Century threat.

Hackers Target Leading Climate Research Unit

The e-mail system of one of the world's leading climate research units has been breached by hackers.

hacker_target E-mails reportedly from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), including personal exchanges, appeared on the internet on Thursday. A university spokesman confirmed the email system had been hacked and that information was taken and published without permission.

An investigation was underway and the police had been informed, he added.

"We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites," the spokesman stated.

Mossad Hacked Syrian Laptop to Steal Nuke Plant Secrets

Mossad reportedly used a Trojan to hack into a Syrian official's laptop while he stayed in a London hotel.

The information extracted was used to plan a bombing raid at a suspected nuclear reactor facility in Syria, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

The air raid on the partly-constructed Syrian nuclear facility in September 2007 took place a year after the unnamed Syrian official left his unattended laptop in his room in a hotel in Kensington, London. The government worker was already under surveillance by Mossad agents, who used his absence to plant the Trojan in order to extract data from the compromised PC.

And gets pat on head for 'acting in the public good'

An Israeli man was cleared yesterday of trying to hack into a website run by Israel's secret service, Mossad.

Jerusalem Magistrate's Court acquitted Avi Mizrahi of computer crime offences after judges ruled his motives for checking the security of a Mossad recruitment site were innocent. Presiding judge Abraham Tennenbaum even praised Mizrahi for "acting in the public good" in trying to access the security level of the site, Ha'aretz reports.

He ruled: "Internet surfers who check the vulnerabilities of Web sites are acting in the public good. If their intentions are not malicious and they do not cause any damage, they should even be praised."
